Home Sweet Home

I have some big news for you guys, I’ve been sitting on this for a little more than a month but I didn’t want to jinx myself by spilling the beans too early. After a few stressful weeks I can finally say that I am no longer a home owner, I sold my house! It’s a bitter sweet feeling, I’m so excited that it sold but at the same time I’m a little sad. I put a lot of time and energy into making that house my own and I grew a lot as a person there.

This week I want to share with you guys the before and after photos of the house. This post is going to be a long one but good news it should be more photo heavy than wordy. I can’t take credit for the after photos, I may have done the renovations but my wonderful realtor took the photos. If you’re looking for a realtor on the South Shore of Nova Scotia I highly suggest Jennifer Gray.

Lets start with my favourite room in the house. I’m sure it comes as no surprise that my favourite room is the kitchen. The kitchen is really the only room that I had a plan for when we started renovating. Really I just knew the colour scheme and that I wanted a giant farm house style apron front sink.

Now lets move on to the living room. My favourite part of this room, the ceiling, was a happy surprise. I had intended to remove the old tiled ceiling and replace it with drywall. After the tile came down we exposed some beautiful beams and I couldn’t bear to cover them back up. It was a lot of work painting the boards and staining the beams but I think the end result was worth it.

Now on to the dinning room. The biggest change in this room was by far opening up the room by taking out a wall.

Lets take this little tour upstairs to the new master bedroom. I say new because I turned two rooms into a giant master by taking out another wall. Its hard to tell from the before pictures that this used to be two rooms but in the after pictures the beam and white floorboard show were the wall used to be.

Now lets move on to the former master. Compared to some of the other rooms I don’t feel like I did a whole lot in here, but a few coats of paint made a huge difference.

Finally the guest room. This room has been called home by a few close friends, I can think of at least 5 people who call this room theirs. The room is self isn’t very special but the people who have stayed here have made it special to me.

In this house I experienced some really great things, this was where I first brought Sophie cat home, where I hosted Thanksgiving dinners and trivia nights, and where friends became family. I also went through some of the worst moments in my life here. Through all of the good and especially the bad times the people who made this house a home have been there, ready to celebrate my victories, and pick me up when I couldn’t stand on my own. To those people I am extremely grateful for all that you have done. You went on this journey with me, some of you have been here through it all at the beginning helping me renovate by ripping up floors, tearing down walls, and removing wall paper with a belt sander and lots of curse words. More recently you brought me food to make sure my family and I were eating, you kept inviting me to things even though I kept canceling once anxiety set in, you kept calling and texting letting me know I was loved and thought of often even when I couldn’t answer. Some of you haven’t been around as long but my life wouldn’t be the same without you in it, you’ve reminded me how it feels to be truly happy, silly and giggly. You’ve also reminded me that it’s ok to be sad and give me a safe place to feel that way.  I’ve also lost people on this journey and while my life will never be the same without them in it they have taught me a valuable lesson, nothing in life is guaranteed, just because you love someone and can’t imagine your life without them in it doesn’t mean they will be there tomorrow. Instead of dwelling on the negative of this message and living in fear I’m choosing to tell the people that matter how much they mean to me, to say I love you more. To those of you who made this house a home, thank you for all that you have done for me, I love you.

I hope you’ll excuse the lateness of this post, I usually try my best to post on Fridays but I thought this one needed a little more time to cook. I know its not my normal format but I hope you’ve enjoyed it. As always let me know what you think.

Until next time,

Desiree
