In one of my first posts I shared a picture of my dinning room table. I’ve had a love hate relationship with this table since I made it. I love that I built it myself but I hated the colour of the table top. I have wanted to change it since the day I put it together. This week I finally did something about it. Before I dive into what I did I want to share the before picture.
Before I could get to sanding I had to get the table out of the house, of course Maddie was super helpful.
When I first stained the table I used Miniwax wood stain in American Walnut, the same stain I used on my dinning room floor. It turned out much darker than I had anticipated. I love the colour of my floor but I couldn’t stand it on the table, it just seemed too dark.
Once I had the table outside I sanded it using 60 grit sandpaper and my palm sander. I took off most of the old stain and I rounded the corners out a bit more. After I finished sanding I was ready to stain. This time I used Miniwax wood stain in Golden Oak.
I used one coat of stain and 3 coats of Varathane diamond finish. I applied the stain with a lint free sponge that I picked up at my local hardware store. If you’re doing this at home make sure you wipe the stain off with a lint free cloth to prevent an uneven colour. After the stain and top coat had dried I added so old looking nails to make the table look a little more rustic.
Before you scroll to the finished product I just want to add a little safety disclaimer. Rags soaked in some stains and varnishes can spontaneously combust while drying so make sure you read warning labels and always follow the directions for proper disposal of the cloths you use.
After I finished the table we took Maddie to her happy place, the beach. Just look how happy she is! I mean it is pretty hard to be unhappy at the beach.
Thats all for now guys. As always let me know if you try this out. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to reach out.
Until next time,
